Diamonds, being a timeless symbol of love and luxury, deserve careful and informed consideration. Understanding the 4Cs of diamonds will empower you to select a piece that reflects your unique style and preferences.
The 4Cs represent the fundamental characteristics that determine a diamond’s quality and value. They are: Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat Weight.
Often regarded as the most important of the 4Cs, the cut of a diamond refers to its proportions, symmetry, and polish. It directly influences the diamond’s brilliance, fire, and overall visual appeal. Diamond cut grades, such as Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor, are used to classify the quality of a diamond’s cut. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, creating a captivating sparkle. Whether featured in a classic solitaire engagement ring or a dazzling halo engagement ring, a beautifully cut diamond will always command attention. Our collection features diamonds with various cuts, each offering a distinct allure and radiance.
Diamond colour is graded on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The presence of colour, or lack thereof, significantly impacts a diamond’s appearance. Our experts can guide you through the range of diamond colours available, helping you find the perfect balance between purity and warmth.
Diamond clarity refers to the presence of internal and external characteristics, known as inclusions and blemishes, which are naturally formed during the diamond’s growth process. Inclusions are internal features within a diamond, which may affect the stone’s transparency and brilliance. Blemishes encompass external imperfections which can impact the stone’s surface appearance. Diamond clarity is graded on a scale that ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I) and all our diamonds are selected to ensure the maximum levels of clarity for your chosen stone.
Carat weight is the standard unit of measurement for diamonds, with one carat equating to 0.20 grams. It directly influences a diamond’s size and, to some extent, its perceived value. However, it is important to note that diamonds of the same carat weight can appear differently sized across varying shapes and cuts. A diamond with a higher carat weight may look no bigger than a diamond of a smaller carat weight if it has a deeper cut. In other words, the carat weight of a diamond does not always indicate its proportionate size.
Whether you’re choosing an engagement ring or exploring our wider collection of diamond jewellery, understanding the relationship between cut, colour, clarity and carat weight will help you select a piece you’ll treasure for years to come.
