It’s one of the first things people notice

When someone tries on a halo engagement ring for the first time, there’s usually one comment we hear almost immediately:

“That looks much bigger than I expected.”

They’re absolutely right.

One of the reasons halo engagement rings have remained so popular is because they’re incredibly clever in the way they’re designed. The surrounding diamonds don’t just add sparkle-they also create the impression of a larger centre stone, giving the whole ring a beautifully balanced appearance.

It isn’t about creating an illusion in a misleading way. It’s simply good jewellery design, something that’s been appreciated for generations.

Small diamonds with a big impact

The row of smaller diamonds surrounding the centre stone naturally draws your eye outwards. Rather than seeing only the centre diamond, your eye takes in the entire design as one sparkling focal point.

The result is a ring that feels more substantial without losing the elegance of a single centre diamond.

Many customers tell us they love this because it gives them the look they’re hoping for while still feeling beautifully refined.

It’s about sparkle as much as size

Although people often talk about halo rings looking larger, we think what they’re really noticing is the extra light.

Each of the surrounding diamonds catches the light from a different angle, adding brilliance and making the entire ring feel more vibrant. If you’re comparing different styles, it’s worth looking at both halo engagement rings and solitaire engagement rings side by side. The difference becomes much easier to appreciate when you see them together.

Carat weight is only part of the story

One of the biggest misconceptions we come across is that a larger-looking ring must contain a much bigger centre diamond.

In reality, two rings can have very different visual impact even if the centre diamonds have exactly the same carat weight. The setting, the diamond shape and the overall design all play an important part.

If you’d like to understand more about how carat, cut, colour and clarity work together, our blog on Understanding the 4 Cs of Diamonds explains why carat weight is only one part of choosing a beautiful diamond.

Choosing what feels right

We’ve found that most people stop thinking about numbers once they start trying rings on.

Instead, they simply notice which ring makes them smile.

Sometimes that’s a classic solitaire. Other times it’s a halo that catches the light from every angle. Neither is the “better” choice-it simply depends on the look you love most.

Every hand tells a different story

One thing we’ve learnt over the years is that engagement rings can look surprisingly different from one person to another.

A ring that appears quite delicate on one hand might create a completely different impression on someone else. That’s why we never like to recommend choosing from photographs alone.

Try them side by side

One of our favourite moments is placing two rings next to each other and watching someone discover the differences for themselves.

Quite often they’ll arrive expecting to choose one style and leave loving another. Comparing halo engagement rings, solitaire engagement rings and other engagement rings in person allows you to see how each one catches the light and feels on your hand.

There’s never any pressure-just honest advice, plenty of time to compare and the chance to find the ring that feels unmistakably yours.
