Two beautiful styles, one important decision

If you’re choosing an engagement ring for the first time, it’s completely normal to feel torn between a halo and a solitaire design. They’re two of the most popular styles we sell, and one of the questions we hear most often in the showroom is, “Which one would you choose?”

The honest answer is… neither is better. It simply depends on what you love. Every couple is different, and so is every engagement ring. Our job isn’t to tell you which one to buy—it’s to help you understand the differences so you can choose the ring that feels right every time you look at it.

One thing we always recommend is trying on both halo engagement rings and solitaire engagement rings. Even if you think you’ve already made your mind up, seeing the two styles side by side can often be a real eye-opener.

What makes a solitaire so timeless?

There’s a reason solitaire engagement rings have remained a favourite for generations. With a single diamond taking centre stage, the design is beautifully simple and allows the stone to do all the talking.

If you love clean lines, understated elegance and a style that will never date, a solitaire engagement ring could be the perfect choice. It’s also incredibly versatile and pairs effortlessly with a wide variety of wedding bands.

Why choose a halo?

A halo engagement ring surrounds the centre diamond with a circle of smaller diamonds, creating extra sparkle and giving the illusion of a larger centre stone. It’s a style that catches the light beautifully and offers a little more presence on the hand without losing its elegance.

Many of our customers are surprised by how refined modern halo engagement rings can look. While they certainly sparkle, today’s designs range from delicate and classic to more contemporary styles, meaning there’s something to suit almost every taste.

Which style suits you best?

One thing we often say is that your engagement ring should fit your life just as much as your style. If you work with your hands, are always on the go or simply prefer jewellery that’s beautifully understated, you may naturally gravitate towards a solitaire.

If you love a little extra sparkle or enjoy jewellery that makes more of a statement, a halo design could be exactly what you’re looking for. Neither choice is more practical than the other when it’s well made and properly cared for – it really comes down to personal preference.

Seeing beyond the photographs

Social media and online galleries are brilliant for gathering inspiration, but they can never replace trying a ring on yourself. We’ve seen so many customers arrive convinced they’ll choose one style, only to leave having completely changed their minds after seeing both rings on their own hand.

It’s often those little details – the way a ring catches the light or how it complements your finger – that make all the difference.

Finding the ring that feels like you

One of the nicest parts of helping couples choose an engagement ring is seeing the moment when they find “the one”. Sometimes it’s exactly the style they expected. Other times, it’s something completely different.

That’s why we never rush the process. We’ll happily let you compare different halo engagement rings and solitaire engagement rings, explain the features of each design and answer any questions along the way. Trust your instincts

There are plenty of guides online telling you what you should choose, but we’ve found that the best engagement rings are the ones that simply feel right. When you put a ring on and can’t stop looking at it, that’s usually a very good sign.

At Regina Rowe Jewellers, we’re here to make choosing your engagement ring an enjoyable experience. Whether you fall in love with a timeless solitaire, a sparkling halo or another style from our collection of engagement rings, we’ll help you find a ring you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

What our customers often choose after trying both on

This is probably one of our favourite parts of helping people choose an engagement ring because it happens so often. Someone will walk into the showroom absolutely convinced they’ve already made their mind up. They’ll tell us, “I’ve definitely come for a solitaire,” or “I’ve only ever wanted a halo.”

Then we invite them to try both.

It’s amazing how often that changes everything.

A solitaire can look beautifully understated in a photograph, but when you see it on your own hand, you suddenly notice how much the diamond becomes the centre of attention. On the other hand, many people are surprised by how elegant today’s halo engagement rings feel. They expect them to be bold, but they’re often much more delicate and refined than they imagined.

Of course, sometimes the opposite happens. Someone arrives certain they’ll love a halo ring, then tries on a solitaire engagement ring and falls in love with its simplicity.

That’s why we never encourage anyone to make a decision from photographs alone. Seeing different styles side by side, feeling how they sit on your hand and taking the time to compare them properly is something no website can recreate. Quite often, the ring that feels right isn’t the one you expected—it’s simply the one you can’t stop looking at.
