Why diamond shape matters

If there’s one question we’re asked time and time again, it’s, “Which diamond shape should I choose?” It’s completely understandable because in a solitaire ring, the diamond is the main event. With no surrounding stones to compete for attention, its shape has a huge influence on the overall look and personality of the ring.

The truth is, there isn’t a single “best” diamond shape. What looks perfect on one person may not feel quite right on another. That’s why we never begin by talking about what’s fashionable. Instead, we like to find out a little about you. Do you love timeless jewellery, or are you looking for something a little more contemporary? Are you after maximum sparkle, or do you prefer elegant simplicity? Looking at different solitaire engagement rings together is often the easiest way to discover what really catches your eye.

Round brilliant – the classic favourite

If you’re looking for a diamond shape that has stood the test of time, it’s hard to beat the round brilliant. Designed to reflect as much light as possible, it offers exceptional sparkle and remains the most popular choice for solitaire engagement rings.

We often recommend a round brilliant to customers who love classic styling or simply want a ring they’ll adore just as much in thirty years’ time as they do today. It’s elegant, versatile and never goes out of fashion.

Oval, emerald and asscher – elegant alternatives

Over the last few years, we’ve seen more and more couples fall in love with oval diamonds. They have a beautiful softness to them and many people love the way they create the illusion of a longer, more slender finger. It’s not unusual for someone to arrive convinced they’ll choose a round diamond, only to try on an oval “just for comparison” and leave wondering how they ever considered anything else.

Emerald and Asscher cut diamonds offer something completely different. Rather than focusing on sparkle, these step-cut shapes highlight the clarity of the diamond with clean, sophisticated lines. They’re perfect for someone who prefers understated elegance over lots of brilliance.

Pear, marquise and princess cuts

If you’re looking for something a little less traditional, pear and marquise diamonds are well worth considering. Their elongated shapes often make the diamond appear larger than its actual carat weight and create a wonderfully elegant look on the hand.

Princess cut diamonds are another favourite, particularly for those who like crisp, modern styling. Their square shape offers plenty of sparkle while creating a clean, contemporary feel that suits many different personalities.

Which diamond shape looks largest?

One thing that often surprises customers is that two diamonds with exactly the same carat weight can look completely different in size. Shapes such as oval, pear and marquise tend to have a larger surface area, so they often appear bigger than a round brilliant of the same weight.

If you’re beginning your search, it’s also worth understanding how cut, colour, clarity and carat all work together. Our blog on Understanding the 4 Cs of Diamonds explains how each of these factors can influence the appearance of a diamond.

Matching your diamond to the setting

Different diamond shapes naturally suit different styles of ring. Round and oval diamonds look beautiful in solitaire engagement rings, while pear and oval diamonds can also look stunning in halo engagement rings. Step-cut diamonds, such as emerald and Asscher cuts, are ideal if you love clean lines and a sophisticated, minimalist look.

There are no hard and fast rules, though. The best combination is always the one that makes you smile every time you look at your hand.

Nothing beats trying them on

If we could offer just one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t choose a diamond shape from photographs alone.

We’ve lost count of the number of customers who’ve walked into our showroom convinced they wanted one shape, only to fall in love with something completely different once they tried it on. Seeing how each diamond looks on your own hand makes all the difference, and it’s something no photograph or website can truly replicate.

At Regina Rowe Jewellers, we’ll happily place different solitaire engagement rings side by side, explain the characteristics of each shape and answer every question you have. There’s never any pressure – just honest advice to help you find the ring that feels right for you.
